Washington Street Christian Church
Joseph Bates became more active in the Christian Church after retiring from traveling the world. He and a few other prominent leaders of the Christian Church in Fairhaven built the Washington Street Christian Church in 1832. He wrote of the Church with these words: “Up to 1832 the Christian church in Fairhaven, with which I had united, had occupied a rented hall, and now began to feel the need of having a house of worship of their own in a more convenient place. Four of the brethren [including Bates] united together and built one, which was called ‘The Washington-street Christian meeting-house.’
