Deering Oaks Park, Portland Maine

During the first half of the nineteenth century the large trees and hillside beauty of the Deering property made it a recreational destination for local residents. In 1879 Nathaniel and Henry Deering and other property owners donated land to the City of Portland for a park. The park continued to grow until in 1922 it totaled nearly 54 acres. The present part is located just below the hill on which old Portland is located. The original property continued up the hill closer to the home of Robert and Eunice Harmon. The Harmon children including the twins Ellen and Elizabeth often played in these woods. Ellen White recollected: “I have spent many pleasant hours in the woods at that place.”
