Mulberry Street home

After retiring from a life at sea, Bates sought to provide a pleasant situation for his wife Prudence who had spent so many years waiting for him to come back from long voyages. He sold his previous residence and in 1832 began to build the Mulberry Street farm. He built a home and barn and planted three orchards of Mulberry trees to raise silkworms.
