Fairhaven Academy
Joseph Bates’s father was one of the founders of New Bedford Academy, soon renamed Fairhaven Academy. When the school was built in 1798, Joseph Bates Sr. was also elected as treasurer. Joseph attended this school as a boy and his picture is prominently displayed in one of the classrooms. Today the Fairhaven Academy serves as the historical society building for the city. The building was moved to its present location in 1907.
