On This Day: June 9th 2016 - Anxious Lechwe

As we drove away from the lions and lechwe, i took a few shots of the lechwe gathered under the trees in the late afternoon light. Here is an extract from my Journal of that day:

The lechwe were in three groups, and the lions worked each group in turn. Chachos set a time limit of 5:40, because we had a 90 minute drive back to Okuti Camp. We broke off our observation as the sun was about to set, the lions still on the trail of the lechwe. Chachos said the lions would make a kill after sunset because lechwe have poor night vision. The lions would approach unseen and take their quarry by surprise.

No painted dogs, no cheetah and no kill, it could have been a bad afternoon, but it was a great afternoon. We talked all the way back to camp, and we connected. What a great way to end my Botswana adventure.

Chachos offered to take me out on a short game drive first thing next morning, but I declined the offer. I'm booked on a 10 o'clock flight to Maun tomorrow morning, with a connecting flight to Johannesburg. Nothing was going to top my afternoon in the grassland with Chachos and the lions.
