The Painted Desert
I avoid taking photos through glass when ever possible. On this day I sat at the front of the bus as we hurtled through this most spectacular landscape. Either I missed taking shots altogether, or I compromised with shots through the windscreen. Since we were not going to stop, I compromised. Consequently I got a record of the scenery in a series of less than optimum shots, but they're better than nothing.
The Painted Desert is composed of stratified layers of easily erodible siltstone, mudstone, and shale of the Triassic Chinle Formation. These fine grained rock layers contain iron and manganese compounds which provide the pigments for the various colors of the region. An exciting and beautiful landscape.
