Through the ring - Heart of Neolithic Orkney; a view through the Ring of Brodgar to the Loch of Harray and the gentle rolling hills beyond on a dreamy summer's day.
The Ring of Brodgar is a potent symbol of the strong Neolithic influence left on the islands and today stands as a superb and dramatic visual icon of Orkney.
Constructed circa 2500 BC, this Neolithic henge and stone circle was formed from 60 vertical or standing stones of which 27 still remain standing. It is situated on an isthmus between the Lochs of Stenness and Harray, close to the Standing Stones of Stenness and the Ness of Brodgar. The ring is the 3rd largest in the British Isles being 104 metres or 125 megalithic yards in diameter and is the most northernmost henge circle in Britain. It forms one of the elements of The Heart of Neolithic Orkney which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in December 1999.
