I begin a new series today called Horicon Marsh Magic...
An hour away from where I live is one of the largest natural wetlands in the U.S. called the Horicon Marsh. My brother-in-law and I spent a half day there on Labor Day 2025, from dawn until 10am, hiking and enjoying the many birds there.
The Horicon Marsh is considered the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States. It's a critical stopover point on the Mississippi Flyway for hundreds of thousands of migrating birds.
At over 32,000 acres (approximately 50 square miles), Horicon Marsh is one of the largest freshwater marshes in the United States. The northern two-thirds of the marsh is a National Wildlife Refuge, while the southern third is a State Wildlife Area.
