Ornamental Onion Flowers
Fifth image in my current Flower Series...
Captured in a neighbor's garden, then edited in my On1 editor.
There are well over 800 species of allium plants worldwide, the most common being onions, garlic, chives, and leeks.
About 250 to 300 species and cultivars are grown for their flowers only and not for food. Botanists have taken those showy species, bred them for the garden industry, and they have become popular in many a garden across the world.
These ornamental alliums do not taste very good, though, and are often bitter and too high in phosphorus to be healthy for human consumption. Just enjoy their pretty flowers :)
