Lenten Rose (Hellebore)
Third image in my current flower series...
A beautiful and evergreen perennial, Hellebore flowers are unique in that they change colors as they age.
Depending on the variety, the flowers first emerge as white or pink, and then slowly turn light or dark green over a month's time. Then the green petals actually begin creating food through photosynthesis, just like the leaves of the plants!
Technically, the petals are not really petals, but are called tepals, because they eventually act like leaves in aiding the plant in photosynthesis.
