The Violoncellist at the Moulin de la Galette, 1905
Kees Van Dongen(1877 - 1968)
Oil on canvas
Van Dongen painted several works in the Moulin de la Galette, a former windmill turned into a popular club whose owner granted free entry to artists. Van Dongen's distinctive application of thick bright dabs of paint conveys the energy and dizzy atmosphere of this celebrated Parisian nightspot. To the right we see the curving neck of a cello with a vase of flowers nearby. it is likely that this was once part of a larger composition that the artist cut into separate pieces in the 1950s.
