Boys and girls play together with a volunteer of Hellenic Red Cross at the Elaionas transit centre near Athens. . .More than 180,000 people have arrived on the shores of Greece so far this year. Hellenic Red Cross responds to the needs of this population emergency not only on islands of arrival, but also on the mainland. The Elaionas Centre has been established by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and has room for 800 people. It is a transit centre, meaning most families will stay only 2-3 days before continuing their journey.
