Although obsolete by contemporary standards, the battleship continues to be an enduring symbol of naval #power.
Pictured here is the main forward battery of USS Massachusetts (BB-59). Each of the six, 16-inch/45 caliber Mark 6 rifles pictured here had the power to fire a 2,700 pound (1,200 kg) shell 23 miles (37 km). This is the rough equivalent of throwing a 2017 Honda Civic from JFK International Airport in New York to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
A South Dakota Class Battleship, USS Massachusetts was laid down 20 July 1939, launched 23 September 1941, commissioned 12 May 1942, decommissioned 27 March 1947 and struck from the Naval Register on 1 June 1962. She earned 11 Battle Stars for service during World War II. No U.S. Sailors or Marines aboard her were killed in action during her combat service.
Since 14 August 1965 she has been a museum ship at Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts.
