Check out counter finished Aug 2021
Built for a local business...made to look like an old distessed farm table. The skeleton is built from salvaged 2x4s 2x6s and any wood I had. The wrapping is made from barn siding recovered from an 1880s barn in Western NY. It is lightly sanded, varnished and glazed with a pickling stain. An old 1/4" window trim was used for the cove molding.
The top is built from 2x4, 2x6s, 2x8s, and a 2x10 hemlock joists and studs from barns and carriage houses. They are left rough but lightly sanded and varnished to make them soft to the touch. Any rises between boards were planed down to evenness. The top still contains saw marks, barn marks, nail holes etc...to give it texture, but is smooth and soft to the touch. No snags. Its not visible in this photo but the top was simply screwed down to the skeleton with wood screws. I made hemlock pegs to fill the screw holes. Unlike joined pieces this was built more like a picnic table with slight gaps...with the expectation of expansion and contraction with the seasons.
Only the screws and varnish are new materials. All the the wood is reclaimed.
