McLaren MP4/1
The first all carbon fibre monocoque Formula One car from 1981, the McLaren MP4/1. Powered by a Ford Cosworth engine, it competed in the '81, '82 and '83 seasons, albeit with modifications along the way.
It was also the first McLaren to be built following their merger with Project Four Racing, hence the name MP4. The 'M' initially stood for 'Marlboro' until 1997 when West became their new title sponsor. From then until 2016, the M simply stood for McLaren and the dayglo red and white livery, synonymous with the team for so many years was consigned to the history books as one of the most iconic team liveries in the history of the sport.
