Swan St. Bridge, Yarra River and Olympic Pool, Melbourne. [Vintage photo, Sept.1968]

View north-east over Swan St. Bridge & Yarra River, Olympic Pool [on the right], towards Richmond, viewed from Kings Domain, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. [Vintage Sept.1968 capture]

Much of the green playing fields seen here have been lost to sporting stadiums and car parks these days. The Olympic Pool (built for the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games), is no longer used as a swimming stadium. Always an area of sporting venues with the nearby Melbourne Cricket Ground, the pool, greyhound racing (also gone, now replaced by a futuristic soccer stadium. The area also houses Tennis Australia's Rod Laver Arena and multiple open-air and covered tennis courts used for the Australian Open each summer. The main tennis arena (with its opening roof), also acts as a stadium concert venue. It didn't exist when this image was taken but is located out of range to the left in this view.

St. Ignacious Catholic Church's steeple can be seen on the horizon in Richmond as can the Pelaco factory building (far left), home to another iconic Melbourne neon sign that's been retained long after shirt manufacturing ceased and the building's use changed.

The photo' was taken in the park-lands near to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and adjoining Royal Botanic Gardens.

This is a home scanned half-frame film slide positive using a flatbed scanner with film strip and slide back-light attachment then processed using Paint Shop Pro 7. Further tweaked using Picnik here on Flickr.
