Sally Lightfoot and the Marine Iguanas

A stirring among the Marine Iguanas: the only seagoing lizard, they start the day by soaking up radiant heat before diving into the cold waters to graze on algae.

When spread out on lava they offer an almost prehistoric landscape, which is typical of the Galapagos islands, home to seven races which vary distinctly in colour and size and are listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List.

These are, Amblyrhynchus cristatus cristatus, on Isla Fernandina: a Sally Lightfoot Crab, Grapsus grapsus, crossing in the foreground.
