Black-backed Jackal

Easy to see why an alternative English name for this Jackal is Silver-backed. This rather relaxed individual was waiting in the shade for the opportunity to collect scraps from a Cheetah kill.

 

One of two distinct sub-species, this C. m. mesomelas found in southern Africa: this one photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The second sub-species C. m. schmidti is found in east Africa.
