The Spot-bellied Eagle-owl

Not an easy photograph in the forest at night but this is an owl at the top of the avian food chain in its forest habitats. A large secretive nocturnal bird of prey, so a magnificent sighting for us.

Their habitats are scattered throughout the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia where they occupy a range of woodlands but with isolated colonies developing some divergence from the species characteristics. This one at Kandalama, Sri Lanka.
