Cedar Falls

It's time to read in Jaci Feuss's kindergarten class. The work is part of an amped up plan to increase literacy proficiency rates at Cedar Falls’ Hansen Elementary School. It’s working: The proficiency rates now hover around 100 percent. What’s going on? They are taking a science- and evidence-based approach to literacy instruction. Explicit and systematic instruction in phonics and phonemic awareness paired with intentional practice opportunities for students to read and write is the new norm.
