ELO's Kelly Groucutt R.I.P.
Kelly and myself. Taken in Indianapolis, 1997.
Kelly was the bass player and secondary vocalist for the Electric Light Orchestra from 1974 to 1983. His unique backing vocals and occasional lead vocals were part of ELO's winning formula in their classic period and part of what drew me to their unique sound.
His wild and humorous stage presence was amazing to watch in the ELO spin-off bands. He's remembered by some as the guy with the big fro and mutten chop mustache back in the day. But in the 90's his head was shaved except for a long ponytail with ribbons attached.
Kelly was a very nice and sincere person. I had the privilege of meeting him a few times and talking on the phone once or twice. He always remembered my name. He was known for treating fans as peers and he was sometimes victim to our crazy antics. He died of a heart attack at age 63 on 2/19. God bless him. He will be missed.
