1930s timber box for playing cards

This box was given to my great aunt by a friend named Ted Wyness. His initials are on the lid ..... E.C.W. (Edward Clarence Wyness). He was a merchant seaman who travelled along the east coast of Australia and visited my great aunt when in Brisbane.

Whether he made it himself of had it done I don't know but the carving was done by burning the wood, known as Pyrography. Each side has a different image.

"Pyrography or pyrogravure is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker. It is also known as pokerwork or wood burning."
