Wild Huntress

Starting at five in the morning and now heading towards midday, it had beeen a long but rather quiet morning game drive at Vumbura Plains in Botswana. Being rocked back and forth in a car for 7 hours is enough to make even the biggest enthusiast get a little tired so by now Hans was tremendously looking forward to lunch and a nice cool glass of white...

We had almost reached camp when our guide suddenly heard something on the radio and immediately turned the car around. The only thing he said was "Leopard" and started driving back an hour in the direction we just came from.

I can only describe the look on Hans' face while mine lit up in excitement. Who needs lunch when you can witness this wonderful sighting of this leopardess having just managed to secure her meal for several days, by hunting down this huge Impala ram. It took her almost an hour to drag in under a bush and she could start eating. I really hope she managed to keep it hidden from other predators for another couple of days.

And although a bit later than foreseen, Hans did enjoy his lunch later on.. :-)
