The Split
Last July we rented a boat and went on a trip through the Dutch waters. One of the stops was a new area for us; the "Marker Wadden".
It consists of 4 artificial islands, marshes and mud flats by which an enourmous lenghth of 'natural' shore was created in an otherwise stagnant lake where bird-, fish- and plant life was rapidly declining. But this bold project added so much nesting and spawning places that wildlife immediately took shelter there. And prospered.
There for only two days we went on a walk on the only accessible island of the four and were absolutely blown away. The whole island was covered in flowers and bird life was abundant. We loved it so much that we decided to cut our stay in the NP 'de Biesbosch' short and return to this magnificent project for another 2 days.
One morning I was up at sunrise (5 AM) and went for a walk, with my camera of course. There was nobody there besides me because you can only stay overnight at the island if you have a boat or stay at the (very limited) cabins. Or you can come by ferry (if you are lucky you can catch a fare on an authentic 3 masted schooner) but then you'll have to leave at 6PM).
The sun rose and light turned golden all around me. The Bearded Reedlings were everywhere but they are só fast! I already had a couple of shots I was really happy with and then this male Reedling decided to do a remake of Jean Claude van Damme's 'epic split' scene in the Volvo truck commercial and took my breath away.
