Double delight

Iceland, to me, is a synonym for Puffins. I simply adore those little clowns with their sweet funny faces and their helpless wobbly gait. So, during our recent trip to Iceland, I was really looking forward to our visit to Latrabjarg, the best cliff to spot Puffins really up close.

But, on our way up there, we got stuck on the beautiful Island of Flatey. My fault entirely I'm afraid, as I was sure that the ferry up north would go at 8PM (which was actually the departure time for the last ferry heading south.. :-)

So we spent the night at Lina's guesthouse, welcomed by the two most adorable chihuahua's you can imagine :-)

A further upside to our unforeseen night at Flatey was that we got to play around that gorgeous island some more. For birding it is paradise!!!

The next morning I headed up the cliff (Michel was hypnotized by a Phalarope somewhere) when I spotted a Black Guillemot way down the cliff near the water. I'm really glad that nobody saw me as I slid down the cliff, rock by rock on my bum, to get to it. (since I started with the more serious photography it seems that 'elegance' has been erased from my dictionary somehow :-))

When I was about halfway, a Puffin flew towards me and I was caught by the perfect reflection it made in the crystal clear water. A sight I had never seen, as I had only seen Puffins high up cliffs so far, and never actually on the water.

Again a heavy crop, but to me, one of the best souvenirs of the entire Iceland trip!
