The fox and the Fawn
Looking out of my kitchen window I saw two fox kits playing in the mid afternoon sun in the middle of the patch of land we own in front of our house. Fox kits! How incredibly cool is that!! So when they had left I took my little tent and put it up quite near to where I had seen them.
For weeks I sat in my little blind, going in when it was still dark and watched them as they came out of the corn field, very early in the morning to play in the first rays of the sun. I moved the tent a little bit closer every other day. Sometimes the mother fox was there too but she was more shy and suspicious of my little tent.
This particular morning the kits didn't show themselves. A Roe Deer doe and her fawn were grazing peacefully put they were still a little bit far away. So I just waited. To be honest I turned back to reading my book, looking up every once in a while. And all of a sudden, when I looked up, there she was.. The mother fox! Staring intently at the really close-by fawn. I didn't know how fast to throw the book aside and point the camera.
There seemed to be a sort of a stand-off between the Fox and the Fawn and for seconds nothing happened (except for the shutter of my camera). I could hardly believe my eyes when all of a sudden the fox jumped out of the corn and went after the fawn!! Within a split second the fawn and the doe fled with the fox in hot pursuit, disappearing in the corn field. It took a while before the adrenaline in my body had worn out.... I saw the doe and the fawn later that day so they got away safely.
(Because of the Fawn standing some 4 meters closer to me it seems quite large compared to the fox but in reality it was just a bit bigger than the fox. The low tripod standpoint and the long telelens distort the proportions a bit)
