Pied in pastels
Rainy season at MalaMala Game Reserve in South Africa. My favourite season there.
The Reserve is split by the Sand River, and every day during game drives you cross either the bridge or the causeway. At the end of November, when the rains come, massive amounts of water come down from the higher regions of South Africa; amounts able to fill the Sand River in less than a day. So quickly that is sometimes even surprises seasoned rangers (when you are there, watch out for crossings that have rangers' names :-)) but for photographers it increases the already unequalled photo opportunities at MalaMala even more.
I just can't get enough of watching the numerous birds, crocs and hippos that take advantage of the rapids caused by the water over the flooded causeway. The fast-flowing water brings along many fish and sweeps them over the rocks; leaving them stunned and disoriented in the turmoil on the other side; easy prey for patient hunters.
For photographers ideal circumstances to experiment with long exposure shots. f32 and +1.7 exposure correction allowed be to bring down speed to 1/40sec, just enough to still have some movement in the water, but freeze the Pied Kingfisher in between it. The colors come from the sandy water, the froth and the rocks underneath the surface.
