Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle

Built by John and Josephine Bowes as a museum for their extensive and often eccentric art collection. The foundation stone was laid in 1869 and the museum opened in 1892. Sadly neither of its founders lived to see the building completed.

This is one of my favourite museums providing many interesting exhibitions. The most celebrated exhibit is a clockwork silver swan which when activated gracefully snatches fish from the water.
