The November Revolution, 1917
Russia was in a state of absolute turmoil. Its involvement in WWI proved to be disastrous, which greatly diminished the power and influence of the Romanov Dynasty that had ruled it for nearly 300 years. Tsar Nicolas II under intense pressure abdicated in March 1917 and the Provisional government (with help from the Petrograd Soviet) was formed. One key promise was to pull Russia out of WWI, which they backtracked on and for the course of 8 months they remained extremely unpopular.
The Soviets (workers councils) were not happy with how the Provisional government was running Russia, or what remained of it as some of it was occupied by the central powers. The Soviets would be lead by the Bolsheviks, a far left group on the fringes of Russian politics who would later dominate the discourse. They were lead by Vladimir Lenin, who was living in exile before he came back to Russia. One main slogan of the Soviets was "All power to the Soviets", meaning that the workers councils wanted to have the ability to make decisions for themselves. For months they waited until the time was right to overthrow the provisional government. That time came on November 7th, 1917 when the Bolsheviks and other leftist allies seized key areas in Petrograd with ease as soldiers "loyal" to the provisional government deserted or joined with the revolutionaries. The seat of government, the Winter Palace was soon seized and the Soviet Union was born.
Immediately after the revolution, the Russian Civil war would start, pitting the Bolsheviks against the Tsarist White Army, ethnic independence movements, and anti Bolshevik leftists.
For a while I wanted to do something World War related, specifically an urban area. I decided to do the city of St. Petersburg once again since I did it before, but not right. I think I succeeded in portraying it right this time, albeit in a different era. Also I will be bringing this to Brickfair 2019 this year. Hope to see you all there!
