Battle of Plataea 479 B.C.
"This day we rescue a world from mysticism and tyranny and usher in a future brighter than anything we can imagine"- Dilios, 300
The battle of Plataea was the final land battle in the Greco-Persian wars in which the united Greek city states would push out the Persian empire.
The Persians were winning the war until their navy was defeated at Salamis. They couldn't reach the Peloponnesus. The Greek city states of Sparta, Athens, Corinth and Megara assembled a large army of 80,000 men. The Persian empire had a remaining invasion force of 120,000 men who set up a fortified camp outside the city of Plataea (seen here).
The battle began when the Greeks abandoned their original positions and the Persian general Mardonius thought they were retreating. The Greeks fought off the pursuing Persian troops and managed to kill Mardonius. Next the Greeks attacked the fortified Persian camp which resulted in the army's destruction. The Battle of Plataea was the last time the Greeks and Persians would fight on Greek soil as the Persians gave up.
