HE ENLISTED AT AGE 16: WHAT A LIFE OF DANGER AND ADVENTURE

THE END OF AN ERA: Last WWI soldier passes away at age 110. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. In addition to serving in Germany as part of the occupation forces, he was also captured by the Japanese when Japan invaded Manila, the Philippines. He was held prisoner in a camp and was fed only a minimum amount of nourishment. His spirit kept him alive and he was released when the war ended in 1945.

Asked by numerous media about his secret for living a long life, he replied, "hope." That is, hope that he would live a long time. That is a simple and easy formula and one that the elderly and aged should find comforting.
