Timeless
A study of a roof section of the Sydney Opera House.
The history of this incredible, beautiful building (inside as well as outside) is a fascinating read. Built from a discarded pencil sketch, even the Danish architect who designed it had no clue as to how to actually build it. What ensued was one of the most tortuous, overextended and over-budget construction jobs in history, which ended up getting paid off in one hit via nationwide lottery.
There was so much bad blood surrounding the architect that he was ultimately thrown off the project and disinvited from the opening ceremony. Still, the end result is one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, instantly recognizable to hundreds of millions of people - a truly timeless design.
Less well known is that it is covered with what are basically Swedish bathroom tiles - 1,056,000 of them, distributed over 1.62 hectares of surface area.
