National Law Enforcement Challenge
The National Law Enforcement Challenge is a Traffic Safety Challenge sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Northwestern University's Center For Public Safety, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and various corporate sponsors. The Ford SUV pictured is given to one of the agencies that have finished first in their category. It is awarded during an banquet at the IACP Annual Conference.
The agency that I work for has been fortunate to be recognized several times in the ten years that we have entered the Challenge.
Awards are given for first, second and third place according to agency size and type (local, county, state, etc.). The idea is to recognize the agencies that are actively conducting traffic safety programs in a manner to safe lives. Education efforts, as well as enforcement activity, and public information efforts are taken into account by the judges.
Per the IACP website:
The National Law Enforcement Challenge provides law enforcement agencies with an opportunity to make a significant difference in the communities they serve. The Challenge is a friendly competition between similar sizes and types of law enforcement agencies that recognizes and rewards the best overall traffic safety programs in the United States.
The program is designed to strengthen and support traffic enforcement nationwide and targets three major traffic safety priorities: occupant protection, impaired driving, and speeding. Participating agencies are asked to provide documentation on their agency’s efforts and effectiveness in areas of officer training, public information, and enforcement to reduce crashes and injuries.
