TITLE: Eastside Magic

PHOTOGRAPHER: Kim Washburn

First Place, Community Choice (tie)

Kim Washburn aimed to capture the spirit of the Carnegie Community Centre when he photographed Christiane Bordier reaching toward the rhododendrons from one of the building’s windows. “Christiane is a familiar elder at the Carnegie,” Kim says. “I like to elevate our elders as much as possible because it takes so much out of us to even get to that stage of our lives down here.” Christiane, 66, had a premonition about appearing in the 2012 calendar shortly after her photo was taken. She explains how later that same day she was contacted about being in a top 40 photo. “There’s a magic about this city. And there’s a very special magic here in the Eastside that I’ve never seen before,” says Christiane.

Kim Washburn (Nakota, Chinese, Scottish and English) has lived in the Downtown Eastside for most of his life. He is one of the carvers of the memorial totem pole at Oppenheimer Park (1997). Having recently turned 51, Kim is excited to share positive aspects of his life, both in writing and in photographs. “I don’t think I have to portray the drama, or trauma, or the destitution. I think that has already been well accounted for in print and imagery,” he says. “I would just like to show the good parts, ‘cause there are so many… some of the most beautiful things I’ve had or experienced in my life came from the Downtown Eastside.”
