Market Street looking west from Monument Place, Indianapolis, Indiana
1911 postmarked postcard view of West Market Street in Indianapolis, Indiana. The photographer was at the base of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument and looking west toward the Indiana State House when this photograph was taken. The vehicular traffic was a mix of automobiles and horse-drawn wagons and carriages. Trolley cars were in this scene as well along with a streetcar near Capitol Avenue.
The Bates Hotel was on the corner at West Market Street and Monument Place (Monument Circle today). The Victorian style tower farther west was on the Windsor Block. That building was at the southwest corner of Illinois Street where the Wm. H. Block Co. would open their iconic department store in 1911. The State House with the Governor Morton Statue stood at the west end of Market Street. The ten-story Traction Terminal Building stood on the northwest corner at the Illinois Street intersection. Beyond that building was the Traction Car Shed where a trolley car was leaving and turning onto Market Street.
This postcard was based on a photograph that included a Bates Hotel sign near the left edge of this scene. The vertical sign hung on the corner of the building. We know this because a different version of this postcard shows the sign. Also, this postcard shows clear evidence of an artist’s work where the sign was removed from the image during the production of this postcard.
From the collection of Thomas Keesling.
