Lemcke Building and Grand Opera House, Indianapolis, Indiana
1908 postmarked postcard view of the Lemcke Building in Indianapolis, Indiana. The building was located on the northeast corner at Market and Pennsylvania Streets. This view was looking northeast from the southwest corner of that intersection. A note in the 1914/1915 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Indianapolis says the Lemcke Building was built in 1899 with the top three stories added in 1906.
A sign north of the Lemcke Building on Pennsylvania Street advertised THE GRAND OPERA HOUSE. A VAUDEVILLE sign hung from the front of that building. The 1914/1915 map set shows the new Lemcke Annex building had replaced that building and the smaller one to the south in 1909. The map set also shows Keith’s Grand Theatre behind (east of) the new Lemcke Annex. A note says it was remodeled in 1909 as well. The entrance to the theatre was on Pennsylvania Street via the new Lemcke Annex.
The awnings on the corner were at the Deschler CIGARS and TOBACCOS shop. The awnings advertised OWL CIGARS. A sign north of Deschler’s advertised a BAR.
From the collection of Tom Hohman.
