Claypool Hotel and Wm. H. Block Co., Indianapolis, Indiana
1919 postmarked postcard view of the intersection at Illinois and Washington Streets in Indianapolis, Indiana. This view was looking northwest across that intersection toward the Claypool Hotel. Numerous pedestrians and a few automobiles were in this scene along with a streetcar.
The first floor of the hotel along Washington Street was retail. The 1912 and 1915 R. L. Polk city directories listed the Weber Drug Co. on that corner. The 1917 directory listed Clark & Cade as the druggists doing business on that corner. The hotel entrance was on Illinois Street. The white building north of the hotel was the Wm. H. Block Co. Department Store on the southwest corner at Illinois and Market Streets. The hotel had been constructed in 1903 and this scene shows the 1914 expansion on the west end of the building. The department store was constructed in 1911. The two buildings were separated by West Court Street.
