Commercial Club, Indianapolis, Indiana

1907 postmarked postcard view of the Commercial Club in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. The building was located on the southwest corner at the intersection of South Meridian and Pearl Streets (28 South Meridian Street). The 1914 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Indianapolis gives 1890 as the year of construction. This view is looking southwest. According to information presented in the 1914 Sanborn™ map set, the small three-story building at the right edge of this view was replaced by the L. S. Ayres Department Store in 1905. Therefore, the photo upon which this postcard was based must have been taken prior to that change.

A 1905 city directory lists the Capital National Bank as the occupant of the first floor of the Commercial Club building. The sign on the cigar store next door advertised the Declarencia 10c Cigar made by the G. Spatz Co. and distributed by The Indiana Cigar Co. (a wholesaler located at 206 South Illinois Street). PAINT STORE was painted above the cigar store on the side of the building next door. The advertising at the right edge of the postcard was on the side of a building that faced Market Street. It was probably advertising BOOKS, STATIONERY and OFFICE SUPPLIES, but the 1905 R. L. Polk directory for Indianapolis doesn’t list a books and stationery store near the Commercial Club.
