Grand Hotel, Indianapolis, Indiana

1909 postmarked postcard view of the Grand Hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana. This hotel was located on the southeast corner at Illinois and Maryland Streets. The view was looking southeast across that intersection from the northwest corner, with Maryland Street on the left and Illinois Street on the right. The main entrance to the hotel was under the portico on Illinois Street. The hotel was already in business when the 1887 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Indianapolis was published. The hotel included the buildings south along Illinois Street to the alley and east along Maryland Street. By 1914, the hotel operation had shrunk considerably.

The signs on the building east on Maryland advertised WALL PAPER and INDIANAPOLIS WALL PAPER CO. The 1905 R. L. Polk directory¹ listed the Indianapolis Wall Paper Co. as a wallpaper wholesaler at 27-29 West Maryland Street. The poles projecting from the front of the west end of that building appear to be painted as barber’s poles. The 1899 R. L. Polk directory² listed William M. Miller as a barber at 33 West Maryland Street.

A vendor's cart was parked just east of Illinois along Maryland Street.

The message was addressed to Clarence Herr in Tell City by a guest at the Grand Hotel.
