Hotel Washington, Indianapolis, Indiana

1913 postmarked postcard view of the Hotel Washington in downtown Indianapolis. This hotel was surrounded by other buildings on the north side of Washington Street between Meridian and Pennsylvania Streets, but those other buildings were artistically eliminated in this postcard scene. The building was located at 30-32-34 East Washington Street and the 1914/1915 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Indianapolis includes a note saying the building was built in 1912. The hotel entrance was at 32 East Washington Street. The map set shows an unidentified store at 30 East Washington Street and a saloon at 34 East Washington Street. The 1914 Polk directory¹ listed the London Raincoat Shop as the business and Joseph Stahr as proprietor of the saloon. Today, this building is the Symphony Center at 32 East Washington Street.
