The 10:17 train coming into Etna Green, Indiana

c1910 postcard view of a train arriving at Etna Green, Indiana

The title says it was the "10:17" train. This was the P. Ft. W. & C. (Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago) Railway line. This line was a major part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system and connected Chicago with Pittsburgh via Valparaiso, Warsaw and Fort Wayne. If this train was running on time, the photo was taken around 10:00 am. Since the shadows were falling from left to right, the photographer must have been looking west-northwest toward Chicago.

The 1914 Kosciusko County atlas¹ shows the Etna Green Depot on the north side of the tracks east of Walnut Street. The street in the foreground must have been Walnut Street and the depot would have been over the photographer’s right shoulder. The atlas also shows an elevator and milling business on the south side of the tracks across from the depot. The elevator would have been behind the photographer. The structure near the right edge of this scene looks like a residence and the atlas shows building lots along the track west of Walnut Street. The heart of Etna Green was a short distance south and southwest of the photographer’s location. The two girls in this scene (one with a bicycle) may have been there just to watch the train, but the two men were there for other reasons. The nearest man’s basket was filled with fruit or vegetables. The second individual was pushing a wheelbarrow or cart of some sort.
