America Unraveled and rewound

Over the last several years, I've felt that America was coming "unravelled" - so I decided to rewind it - in this quilt. This is a "deconstructed" American flag. -- See the first row of stars and the first red stripe - spiraling out of the middle? The alternate spiral is people - just hand, shoulder, face, shoulder, hand. Holding on to each other in rescue. -- with the first person holding a candle and the last person holding a banner - United We Stand, Divided We Fall. All the people are made of different pieces of old clothing.

What is that candle to you? What are the central ideas of America - that we should all "circle up around"? What would the world lose if America were not here?
