Holmepark's Hidden Depths

I've always known there was a quarry beneath Holme Park Fell. You can vaguely see the entrance as you travel on the M6, but you have absolutely no idea of its scale. It is extremely well hidden by woodland and you can also catch a glimpse of the quarry tops from the fell side.

I was quite amazed at the scale of the excavations when I finally got round to seeing the site and I actually took a pano of the quarry, which a may post at some point, as this shot is just the top end of the quarry.

The sunlight made the scene quite photogenic with azure coloured pools of water, probably caused by the limestone minerals in the run off. The quarry produces tons of aggregate for the construction industry and has a licence to continue until 2043. God knows how big it will be by then!!
