Beyond the wall.
A gorgeous view down the Upper Eskdale Valley from the high ground near the old Roman Fort at Hardknott, looking towards the Scafell range.
My eye was drawn by the long dry stone wall that leads right up the valley, which certainly stood out in the bright late afternoon winter sunlight.
I had wandered around the ruins of the Roman Fort and had the whole area to myself. It certainly had me thinking what life must have been like for the Roman Soldiers stationed here on this lofty site throughout the winter months, miles from their Mediterranean climes! There certainly would not have been many winter days like this one to enjoy, for sure!
