Sandhill Crane GPS Tracker
On our recent trip to see the Sandhill Cranes, we spotted two Sandhills who had solar GPS trackers on their legs. This is the first time I've seen this type of tracking device on a bird. Not the best photos, I couldn't get a good angle but still I found it very cool to see! They must be incredibly light and not too intrusive for the bird, but I often wonder about that.
We've seen many different types of tags over the years though mostly leg bands, a flag leg band, neck bands, wing tags and a radio antenna attached to the back of a Red Knot. I think the devices we have seen on the Ridgway's Rails at Arrowhead Marsh were GPS trackers but they were attached to the back of the bird.
