Hundreds of nests
From a distance it's hard to tell these trees are filled with nests, and the nests are filled with Great Blue Herons. There are plenty more nests to the left and right of this view. This was my first visit to Wangunk Meadows Wildlife Management Area, on the east bank of the CT River. The rookery across the water is on Gildersleeve Island in the middle of the river. I would need waders and a longer lens to get closer shots - or maybe a boat (once the ice on the river melts) - but even at that distance I could hear lots of cronking. (Cronking = croaking + honking) Check out heron sounds at www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Great_Blue_Heron/sounds.
