Tiger and Turtle - Magic Mountain: a walkable sculpture / roller-coaster
A large former industrial dump was redeveloped, vegetated and laid out with paths that spiral upwards around the former rubble dump. It all cost $ 13 million.
A very special landmark, the "Tiger & Turtle - Magic Mountain", was erected at the summit in 2011 at a cost of $ 2.5 million. This large walkable sculpture looks like a roller coaster - with turns and loops. 249 steps with different gradients are to be mastered here.
The large sculpture is a work of art by Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth, which was developed as part of the "Ruhr.2010 Capital of Culture".
With galvanized steel as the building material, the sculpture has a historical connection to the site. The structure with a base area of 40 by 41 meters is a little over 20 meters high (upper edge looping). It is completely accessible except for the looping, which means that you have to walk back to the entry point in both directions. As it is less than one meter wide, there are always bottlenecks, especially on the steeper sections, so a maximum of 195 visitors are allowed at the same time. The maximum reachable point is 13 meters high.
The slag heap rises 35 meters above the surrounding street level, so that a visitor to the sculpture can see the surrounding (industrial) landscape such as the Krupp Mannesmann iron and steelworks in Hüttenheim, the Duisburg city center, the Rhine and in good weather and especially in the dark Düsseldorf (i.e. Airport, Rhine Tower).
The total weight of the large sculpture is 90 tons. For security reasons, the number of visitors is limited, the looping area is closed off and access is restricted according to time and weather conditions. At night, the sculpture is illuminated by 880 LED lamps in the handrails.
Unfortunately, in the rather lonely area of the city, visitors of different age groups were attacked several times at gunpoint at different times of the day. The robbers are always after money, cameras and cell phones.
