Düsseldorf: Rhein und Rheinufertunnel
The Rhine Embankment Tunnel runs along the right bank of the Rhine and was opened to traffic on 15 December 1993 after three and a half years of construction. It is regarded as a project of the century in Düsseldorf and one of the largest traffic calming projects to date, as Düsseldorf was too much separated from the Rhine by the busy Rhine bank road. In the meantime, 55,000 cars drive underground every day.
