Mountain Pine forest in raised bog - Pinus mugo nothosubsp. rotundata (P. × rotundata) (48°30' N 14°51' E)

2011-08-27 Upper Austria, district Freistadt - Tanner Moor/ raised bog (930 msm Quadrant 7455/3).

German name: Latsche, or also (and scientifically incorrect) "Moor-Spirke" (a name used only for this subspecies which is growing half-way upright)

Growing on Sphagnum: this is not solid ground but 'spongy', only that now it is very dry (after two weeks of extreme heat), and for this reason it is was even possible to walk over the raised bog on some places.

On the ground one finds also Vaccinium vitis-idaea, a few Vaccinium myrtillus, and also few Vaccinium uliginosum.

For discussion about the classification of this variety of Pinus mugo see also remarks and discussion here.
