60th anniversary of manned Mercury spaceflight "Aurora 7", 1962 - 2022 (May,24th,1962)
On May, 24th, 1962, an Atlas rocket launched from Cape Canaveral (Florida, USA) for the fourth crewed flight of Project Mercury. On the top of the rocket was the Mercury capsule „Aurora 7“, piloted by astronaut Scott Carpenter (1925-2013).
„Aurora 7“circled the earth three times and travelled 122,000 kilometers. Because of several problems during the flight, astronaut Scott Carpenter splashed down 400 kilometers from the target. After nearly an hour of searching, „Aurora 7“and astronaut Scott Carpenter were located. A helicopter transported astronaut Scott Carpenter to the aircraft carrier USS „Intrepid“, the Mercury capsule „Aurora 7“ was transported by USS „John R. Pierce“ to Puerto Rico and then flown back to Cape Canaveral (Florida, USA). Today, „Aurora 7“is displayed at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago (Illinois, USA).
Astronaut Scott Carpenter left the space program in 1964 to participate in the Navy`s SEALAB program. He retired from NASA in 1967 and from the Navy in 1969.
On October, 10th, 2013, astronaut Scott Carpenter died in Denver (Colorado, USA).
Because of the 60th anniversary of the manned Mercury spaceflight „Aurora 7“, I would like to remind you to this historic flight and of my friend, astronaut Scott Carpenter. I met Scott twice and we had beautiful talks together which I will never forget.
I made also a small movie which you will find here:
